Explore Peer-Reviewed Philosophy Journals

The PJIP maintains a comprehensive list of Philosophy journals, offering insights to help researchers identify apt journals for their work. Each record includes information on journal aims and scope, editorial boards, word/page limits, anonymity policies, and open-access options. If a journal participates in the PJIP Operations Survey, its listing will also be accompanied by statistics about response times, acceptance rates, and % of submissions that are desk-rejected.

The Sub-Fields selector above the directory can be applied to isolate particular subject subdisciplines. The Custom Search Builder below the directory can be used to show only particular journals. For example, setting Area to equal GNRL will only show generalist journals, setting OpAc to not NOA will remove journals that do not offer the option to publish open access, etc. This functionality applies to all data stored in the table, including that in the drop-down menus. More information on how to use these features can be found in a guide here.

* Some journals do not specify an upper word limit (Philosophical Review, Philosophers’ Imprint, Ergo, Inquiry, Dialectica, Philosophies, Journal of Moral Philosophy, Journal of Ethics and Social Philosophy, Politics, Philosophy & Economics, HOPOS, Oxford Studies in Ancient Philosophy, Journal of Philosophical Logic, and Cognition). To make the results sortable 15000 is used.  Additionally, some journals specify limits in number of pages (Synthese 15 – 30, Philosophia 20, Analyse & Kritik 20, The British Journal for the Philosophy of Science 24, The Journal of Symbolic Logic 30, Metaphysica 25, Journal of Value Inquiry 25, Journal of Theoretical and Philosophical Psychology 40, and Pro-Fil which asks for no more than 45000 characters. These have been converted to words at a rate of 500 words per single-spaced page. Importantly, what is included in the word count varies by journal (footnotes, references, abstract) so check submission guidelines.
** Practices vary by journal. For book reviews, in most cases, you are advised to contact the journal reviews editor. For discussions, check the submission guidelines for more information.
